Firemen’s Association seeks help to keep house moving
It's hard to find a Crawford County youngster who hasn't made at least one trip through the Crawford County Firemen's Association Fire Safety House - and association members want to keep it that way.
In order for that to happen, however, the association, which is comprised of all the county's paid and volunteer fire companies, needs some help.
This is a house that travels. In fact, it's a trailer - one that's designed to give kids a bit of first-hand experience in what to do when there's smoke in the house. If a door is hot, for example, the last thing you want to do is open it.

A Hartstown man is in critical condition in an Ohio hospital's intensive care unit and his horse was killed after a car struck the back of his buggy on a Mercer County road and fled early Monday.
Pennsylvania State Police at Mercer reported 22-year-old Erven A. Byler was ejected and thrown about 50 feet from his horse-drawn buggy after an unidentified vehicle struck him from behind around 12:50 a.m. on Route 358, just east of Huey Road near Hadley.
Police said Byler was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth's Trauma Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Burglar hits movie set at Conneaut Lake Park
SUMMIT TOWNSHIP - Police are investigating after a gas generator was stolen from the set of a major motion picture being shot at Conneaut Lake Park recently.
Pennsylvania State Police reported someone entered the park sometime between 5 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday and stole the generator, which was being used by the production group for “The Road.”
A few scenes for the cinematic adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel were shot Friday and Saturday at the park. Following a nearly two-week stint in Erie County (chiefly at Presque Isle State Park), the production group of about 100 briefly set up shop at the 116-year-old park, using the midway, the Beach Club, the boardwalk and behind Hotel Conneaut.

Lack of rain ignites record-setting brush fires
Much-needed rains have returned to the area for the start of May, leaving behind a warm, dry April that marked the worst month for brush fires throughout Crawford County in recent years.
With a total of 95 brush fires reported last month, the county had almost 15 times the number of such fires in April compared to the same time in 2007, according to Crawford County Office of Emergency Services officials, who said the numbers set a record for the last three years.
A majority of the fires, officials have said, resulted from a mixture of dry, warm conditions and wind. Putting those ingredients together with the apparent eagerness of some to burn off dead grass or garbage, it's easy to see how flames can spread out of control quickly.

Police: Man tried to lure kids into his vehicle
VERNON TOWNSHIP - Two young boys were playing outside this week when a man they didn't know stopped beside them and tried to entice them into getting inside his vehicle.
The children, ages 7 and 8, ran off as a Mullen Road neighbor who witnessed the incident Wednesday afternoon alerted the Vernon Township Police Department.
Now, "we're appealing to the public for assistance" in apprehending the man, township police Chief Randy Detzel said Thursday during the Vernon Township supervisors meeting.

Four charged in peace brawl
EDINBORO - Four persons were charged with harassment Wednesday for their actions in a scuffle at a peace rally in Edinboro April 22.
Charges were filed against Jason and Carrie Swartout of Townville and sisters Andrea and Alyssa Stelmack of Erie, students at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Jason Swartout is an Iraq War veteran. He, his wife, 14-year-old son and other children were among a group of pro-troops supporters counterprotesting a pro-peace event held by a group called Tuesdays at Two.
According to previous reports, two groups were on opposite sides of the street and had been shouting at each other, but the physical scuffle didn't start until the Swartout's 14-year-old son crossed the street to videotape part of the event.

War machines prepare to ship out from Meadville
Cambridge Springs Police Chief Eric Johnson must have been feeling a little bit like famous World War II Gen. George Patton on Tuesday. When about 30 military vehicles were about to roll into his little community, Johnson got the call: "Can you meet me downtown and block off some streets?" a visiting National Guard commander asked.
Then, Chief Johnson led the way, escorting a convoy on a through-town path to a new military base on the outskirts of town.
More than 260 pieces of mobile military equipment - including about 70 cutting-edge Stryker combat vehicles - are descending on Crawford County this week as Northwest Pennsylvania National Guard troops prepare to ship out for overseas deployment.

Quick action saves lives of neighbors
Thanks to quick action on the part of the next-door neighbors, residents of a two-story home at 803 Penn St. in Meadville got out in time when a fire broke out Friday morning.
Meadville Central Fire Chief Larndo (Tunie) Hedrick said Friday his investigation is complete and the origin of the fire, which started at the rear of the residence, has been ruled "undetermined." The fire, which caused heavy damage to the structure, was reported at approximately 9:19 a.m.
According to Hedrick, Michael and Joan Hammond and their two children resided in the single-family home, which is owned by Christy Mast.

Firefighter, Channellock team up on Rescue Tool
"Thunderstruck" is how Chris Gillingham describes himself that fateful day in April four years ago.
"It hit me like a lightning bolt," said Gillingham, a captain with Meadville Central Fire Department when he thought of an idea for a new multi-use hand tool for firefighters.
Now being manufactured by Channellock Inc., the Meadville-based maker of hand tools, The Rescue Tool combines six tools into one specifically for firefighters, police and other first responders.

Fire department accepts $17,800 grant
After escorting his daughter to Allegheny College to begin her freshman year, James Gallagher made a stop in downtown Meadville before heading back to his California home.
"He saw there was a firehouse here and so he came over and asked if there was anything they needed money for," Gallagher's daughter, Jessie, said Thursday afternoon.
That's exactly the way Chief Larndo (Tunie) Hedrick of Meadville Central Fire Department remembers Gallagher's August 2007 visit. "When he asked if there was anything we needed funds for, I told him we needed another camera to replace one that's 12 years old - and that we needed to upgrade our heavy vehicle rescue bags."
